Settled by early Maori and then French and English settlers the Akaroa Museum is a great start to learning more about the area.  The pretty heritage buildings and summertime gardens are a treat for photographers.  Lots of fabulous cafes and restaurants catering for all budgets and food desires.

Akaroa is a great base for a large variety of walks.   Also the start and finish of the private Banks Peninsula Track - so stay before or after.
